A Beauty Boutique in The Shops at Target

Come May 6, The Cos Bar will be in all Target stores and target.com as part of the “first flight” of The Shops at Target in the latest—and perhaps greatest—version of a beauty store-within-a-store. How interesting!

On Jan. 13, Target announced this new program, where it’s directly partnering with shop owners of specialty stores and boutiques to co-create affordable, limited-edition collections for its customers. “Flights” are planned for 2012 and beyond in the ongoing program.

“One of the reasons our guests love shopping at Target is our design partnerships,” says Brian Robinson, director of fashion and design partnerships. “They create excitement and leave even the most loyal Target shoppers wondering what we’ll do next. With The Shops at Target, we’re building on that sense of discovery by offering our guests a chance to experience one-of-a-kind specialty stores and boutiques through collections that have been specifically tailored to their wants and needs.”

The Cos Bar, which participated in the Discover Beauty program at Cosmoprof North America 2011, is one of five U.S. specialty stores to feature exclusive collections across five different product categories in the first flight. The others are candy, a bakery for dogs, home-decorating products and unique apparel. Together, the collections will offer nearly 400 products.

Lily Garfield opened The Cos Bar in 1976 in Aspen, Colorado, and has since expanded it to 12 stores in eight states. (Garfield was last interviewed in Beauty Store Business for “Got Prestige?,” January 2011, pages 60-62.) Each location exudes that of a European perfumery, boasting a distinguished anthology of globally recognized prestige makeup, skin care, fragrance and men’s grooming brands.

The Cos Bar will bring its unique beauty experience to Target with bodycare products, bath accessories, beauty tools, manicure essentials (including a nail file for $1) and cosmetic bags in eye-catching prints, according to the mass-market retailer.
