Retail Sales Increased 0.6% in November

Holiday shoppers took advantage of deep discounting and early sales to lift retail spending in November, says the National Retail Federation. Not including automobiles, gasoline stations or restaurants, retail sales increased 0.6% seasonally-adjusted over October and 3.2% unadjusted over November 2013. Gains were consistent with NRF’s holiday sales forecast, which anticipates an increase of 4.1% over last year.

More Holiday Shoppers Pay With Smartphones

Nearly 30% of U.S. smartphone owners plan to use mobile payment offerings, such as Apple Pay or Google Wallet, for shopping in stores this holiday shopping season, according to the 2014 Holiday Mobile Payments Survey from Stratos, creator of the Bluetooth Connected Card Platform.

In fact, 17% of the smartphone users said they would spend more because of these new payment options. Smartphone users wanted to use mobile payments applications such as Apple Pay and Google Wallet in these locations for the holidays:

Groupon’s North American sales were up more than 25%, compared to last year, for the full Black Friday through Cyber Monday weekend.

As the company announced its record-breaking holiday weekend sales in North America, it noted that the results represented its most successful four days ever in the six-year history of its ecommerce marketplace. This year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday, in particular, were the two biggest days in Groupon's North American history.
