Better Economy Leads to Growth for Salon Services, Products

Total revenues for all salon-industry services—hair, skin and nails—plus salon retail grew at a respectable 3.1%, according to the new 2014 Professional Salon Industry Haircare Study from Professional Consultants & Resources, a leading salon-industry strategic-consulting and data-source company.

The total U.S. salon haircare market segment (services and retail) registered $67.02 billion, representing growth of 3.2%. There are nearly 303,000 salons and barbershops in the United States that use and sell salon haircare products.

Professional salon haircolor product sales (at manufacturers’ shipment dollars) grew by 3.6% in 2013 to $783 million, with hair color continuing to be the primary driver of the salon business around which all other services revolve, according to the new 2013 Professional Salon Haircolor Study from Professional Consultants & Resources.

Salon and professional beauty appliances and shears grew 7.1% as a category in 2012, according to the new 2012 Professional Salon & Pro Beauty Industry Appliances & Shears Study from Professional Consultants & Resources, which provides market intelligence and data research for the U.S. salon and professional-beauty industry. Note that the 7.1% growth is 18% greater than the overall salon industry’s growth rate of 6% for the same time frame.
