May 12, Mother's Day, is almost here! Consumers will spend an average of $168.94 on mom this year, up 11% from last year’s $152.52, and total holiday spending is expected to reach $20.7 billion. That's according to the National Retail Federation's Mother’s Day spending survey conducted by BIGinsight.

More than eight out of 10 shoppers will purchase at least one gift card, and nearly six in 10 want to receive one, according to the National Retail Federation 2012 Holiday Consumer Spending Survey conducted by BIGinsight.

Survey results you can use in your beauty business this holiday season:

Shoppers will spend an average of $156.86 on gift cards—the highest amount in the survey’s 10-year history.

They'll spend an average of $43.75 on each card they buy.

Online retailers are intensifying their efforts to attract eager shoppers with free shipping deals and other exclusive online promotions. More than 61% of online retailers started their online holiday-marketing promotions by Halloween, according to Shop.org’s eHoliday survey conducted by BIGinsight. More than 38% will begin marketing their online promotions by mid-November or later.

Consumers are preparing for a holly, jolly holiday season, although it’s evident that most will take a conservative approach with their gift-giving budgets. The average holiday shopper will spend $749.51 on gifts, decor, greeting cards and more, according to the National Retail Federation's holiday consumer-spending survey conducted by BIGinsight.

That's up slightly from the $740.57 that the average holiday shopper actually spent last year.

So how's your back-to-school sales of beauty products going? Are your lice-prevention haircare products selling well? There are still B-T-S dollars out there.

The average person with a child in elementary, middle or high school will spend $688.62 this B-T-S season, reports the National Retail Federation's 2012 back-to-school spending survey conducted by BIGinsight. That's up from $603.63 last season.

Americans To Save Their Tax Refunds

More Americans intend to save—rather than spend—their federal tax refunds this year, according to the National Retail Federation’s “Tax Returns Consumer Survey” conducted by consumer-intelligence firm BIGinsight.

Two-thirds of taxpayers are expecting a refund this year—the exact same as last year. Nearly 44% of them are expected to stash away some of their refund in savings—the most in the survey’s nine-year history (and up 2% from last year).
