Amazon Prime’s got competition. Walmart recently launched free two-day shipping on more than 2 million of its products, from food products to cleaning supplies, baby necessities and so forth. The multinational retailer will not require a membership fee and the shipping deal will apply to purchases of $35 or more.
“I couldn’t be more excited. We are moving at the speed of a startup,” said Marc Lore, president and CEO of Walmart U.S. e-commerce. “Two-day free shipping is the first of many moves we will be making to enhance the customer experience and accelerate growth.”
Walmart’s free two-day shipping, to home and store, competes with some of the best shipping deals online, including Amazon Prime, which requires a $99 annual fee or $10.99 monthly fee for its free 2-day shipping, which is accompanied by a host of other shipping options and benefits, including unlimited movie streaming.
Walmart’s no-membership requirement for 2-day shipping will prove a convenience for many customers, along with the fact that purchase totals under $35 will be eligible for a shipping upgrade for $5.99. Customers will be able to identify products that are eligible for free 2-day shipping, as “2-Day Shipping” will appear highlighted in green below the price.
“In today's world of ecommerce, two-day free shipping is table stakes. It no longer makes sense to charge for it,” adds Lore.
The mega retailer will continue to offer same-day store pickup on many items, as its currently available at more than 4,600 stores; as well as online grocery pickup at more than 600 locations across the country, with plans to expand the service in the coming year. Items being shipped to stores will continue to have no minimum.
